Responding to Crisis and Trauma

What you NEED to know to help

Friday June 19, 2009

With Elaine Booth, LMSW

9:00am - 4:30pm

This seminar defines critical incidents, crisis, trauma, traumatic grief, recognition thereof, and the helping responses. Crisis and trauma can undermine one’s well being but with swift and prepared intervention, the negative impact can be effectively lessened. The seminar is designed for lay caregivers, mental health and other professionals.

6 CE credits can be earned.

Participants completing this hands-on seminar should be able to:

1) List key reactions to crisis, trauma, and grief

2) Implement important interventions for crisis, trauma, and grief

3) Recognize treatment implications for unresolved crisis, trauma, and grief

The strategies used to address the needs of people in crisis or trauma are different then ones used in therapy or other non-critical counseling situations.

INSIGHTS & TOOLS: The brain and trauma; the ABCD Model to Crisis Intervention; Children and Teens in trauma; EMDR treatment information; Local and national support resources for victims and you, the interventionist; Video clips of survivor responses.

“GROUND ZERO” brings vivid images to everyone’s mind and we think of mass loss and tragedy. Natural disasters upset communities and individuals for years to come. Personal tragedies and trauma present coping challenges. In truth, “Ground Zero” can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere – life situations that overwhelm our coping responses. Attending this seminar will prepare you to help others through life’s difficult times. While we can’t necessarily prevent them, we can help lessen the impact by knowing what to say, what to do, and how to help at critical times.

Why this seminar is important to YOU?

“Whether caused by natural forces, accidents, or intentional acts, public health disasters, and mass casualty incidents can have a profound effect”…and “Experience in the USA and other countries has repeatedly shown that following such disasters…there is a surge of demand for health services & resources to meet the emotional & spiritual needs of victims.” (source: International Journal of Emergency Mental Health, Vol. 9, 2008.)

It is GOOD to be prepared to help.
